Opportunities → Book Artist-in-Residence
Each year, the Center for Book Arts awards 3 to 4 residencies to artists who have demonstrated a commitment to the book arts as a key component of their artistic practice. This year’s cohort was selected by a panel of independent professionals in the book arts: Maria Veronica San Martin, artist and former CBA Resident; Harley Spiller, Ken Dewey Director of Franklin Furnace; and Julie Chen, book artist and educator.
The Book Artist Residency has a goal to fortify the practice of early career artists in the book arts, to provide access to professional equipment, financial support, specialized training, career advancing opportunities, space to work, and to strengthen and diversify the community of book artists working within the New York area.
This year long residency includes a cash stipend, materials budget, tuition waiver for all courses offered at CBA during the residency period, and 24-hour access to CBA printing and binding studios in Manhattan.
Book Artists-in-Residence are expected to actively utilize the studios and to complete an artist project by the end of the residency period to be included in a group exhibition.

Current Book Artists-in-Residence (2021/22)
Tsohil Bhatia (b.1992 New Delhi, IN) is an artist and homemaker currently based in Lenapehoking now known as New York City. They received their MFA at the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University (2020). Tsohil’s practice emerges from contemplations about the latencies of mundane objects, rituals, and images – bringing together the complexities of human existence and the body’s relationship with time and the space it inhabits. Through their performance practice, Tsohil explores and addresses paradoxes as well as represents unresolvable concepts and emotions. They utilize books as containers for preserving ephemera. Sarah Moody is an artist and letterpress printer focused on slow work, analog processes, and the digital divide. Through print and small publications, her work addresses communication, the delicate nature of language and technology, and how they intermingle. She earned an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts and a BA in Art History from Carleton College. She has previously assisted classes at Pratt Fine Arts Center and during the Summer Institute at Wells Book Arts Center, where she was also an artist-in-residence (2019). Gwen Smith is a practitioner of the Book Arts using the exquisite corpse of memory to reconstruct archives and find her place within the diaspora. Smith’s work grapples with identity and attempts to gain freedom by addressing the traumas inherent in that search. Read More
